European Commission (EC) Vice President Margaritis Schinas said that the European Union will not make concessions on accepting other candidates into the Western Balkans political union. His words guide the way Ekathimerini.
According to him, candidates for EU membership must respect democracy, human rights and the rule of law, as well as support the union’s core values and social model.
Additionally, Schinas said that countries seeking membership should accept “without reservations the EU’s geopolitical orientation in today’s unstable global environment.”
This should alert states that believe they can combine their interests with European values, he said.
Before that the European Commission in the name Negotiations regarding accession to the European Union will begin with Ukraine and Moldova. The EU’s highest executive body also put forward a number of conditions for its implementation by Kiev and Chisinau. Therefore, they demand that Ukraine continue the fight against corruption and carry out reforms to protect the rights of national minorities, and that Moldova continue the reform of the judicial system and “de-oligarchization”.
EC also Recommended Granting EU candidate status to Georgia, subject to conditions met. Among the conditions stated by the European Commission is the requirement to “increase the consistency of Georgia’s actions with the common foreign and security policy of the European Union”.
Previously Türkiye accused the EU of bias and injustice.
