The US cooperates with any government elected by Poland. I have built good relations with the previous government and I am sure I will have them with the new government as well; I am sure that our values will coincide – said US Ambassador to Poland Mark Brzezinski on RMF FM.
About Poland’s relations with Brussels
On Thursday, Brzezinski was a guest on RMF FM radio, where he was asked, among other things: about the possible warming of Poland’s relations with the European Union administration after the change of government.
We are very much looking forward to improving relations with Brussels. We very much want Poland to maintain normal and intensive relations with Brussels
– stated the ambassador in response.
When asked what he now believed these relationships to be, he said that “they are not strong, they are weak; are not normal.”
The appointment of Donald Tusk as Prime Minister offers a strategic opportunity to normalize and strengthen relations with Brussels. (…) Poland’s relations with Brussels will normalize immediately; Poland’s relations with Berlin will improve immediately; this is of great importance for relations with Ukraine
– said the ambassador.
Poland must be as strong as possible; this is something that our Joe Biden administration is very pleased with, we believe it will add value during this difficult time
– added the diplomat.
About cooperation in the field of nuclear energy
Brzezinski was also asked whether the change of government in Poland could affect nuclear energy projects carried out by Poland in cooperation with the United States.
This is a very important issue. Energy security means national security. Everyone – regardless of whether they come from the old or the new government – sees how important it is to provide ourselves with a stable energy source
– he said.
He added that he saw support for nuclear energy everywhere in Poland.
From the Poles’ point of view, it is very smart that they want to invest in this; we want to support it
– he said.
About the rule of law in Poland
The diplomat was also asked about the US position on the rule of law in Poland.
Our position is consistent. We speak clearly about the values expressed in the diplomatic mission: military action, the rule of law, the primacy of law over violence, legal certainty, freedom of expression and media, equality and human rights. We have expressed this strongly in Poland and supported groups that fight for these values
– said Brzezinski, noting that on Thursday he met with representatives of organizations dealing with the rule of law, including: organization “Free Courts”.
I want to talk to them and find out what their expectations are regarding the new government. We look for all possible ways to support such groups
– added. When asked whether “the values of the new administration may be closer to American values than those of the outgoing administration,” Brzezinski stated that “Donald Tusk is well known and respected in America, he is a former head of the European Council. , and its principles and values are well known.”
I am optimistic that the values we share as your partners will coincide with those of the new government.
– he said.
The US cooperates with any government elected by Poland. I have built good relations with the previous government, and I am sure I will continue to have good relations with the new government
– added.
Asked whether U.S. relations with the new government in Poland could be closer, Brzezinski stated that “we will have just as good relations with the new government as we do with the current one; “It is in our interest, Poland and America.”
Our countries have never done so much together as in 2023
said the ambassador.
About the American presidential elections
In the United States, there is a bipartisan agreement on foreign policy: transatlantic relations, the security of Central and Eastern Europe and Poland; it is stronger than it is sometimes presented in the media – said US Ambassador to Poland Mark Brzezinski on RMF FM.
On Thursday, Brzezinski was a guest on RMF FM radio, where he was asked, among other things: about the words of KO MEP and former Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski, who said in the European Parliament that “one of the things that does not let him sleep is that the US elections could go wrong next year.” The US will hold presidential elections in 2024, in which incumbent President Joe Biden will likely face former President Donald Trump, known for his controversial statements about NATO and the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Then we will really get into trouble and we will have to think seriously about European defense
– said Sikorski, quoted by RMF. The host also recalled the words of the former US ambassador to Poland, Daniel Fried, who said that “we must think about European defense in case America is organized by someone who does not care about the security of Europe, someone who is hostile towards the allies.”
Brzezinski emphasized that he “respects these opinions.”
I work for the administration of President Joe Biden, who has made it very clear that we will protect every square inch of NATO territory
– he said.
My expectation as Head of Mission in Poland is that we will ensure that we consider every option, every possibility, to ensure that Poland is safe. I can say we did it
– he declared.
In addition, as Ambassador, I have hosted more than 170 members of Congress visiting Poland since February 2022 (the Russian invasion of Ukraine – PAP). When I was ambassador to Sweden, I hosted six members of Congress for more than four years. And here we have over 170 in just over a year – Republicans, Democrats, both speakers (of the House of Representatives – PAP) – Nancy Pelosi, Kevin McCarthy… I can assure you that we will work across divisions when it comes concerns our transatlantic relations and when it comes to European security in central and eastern Poland: the security of Poland
said the ambassador.
The current president is committed to security, and there is a bipartisan agreement on foreign policy that is stronger than the media sometimes portrays
– stated Brzezinski.
When asked about statements about “European defense,” Brzezinski said he saw in Poland “an exceptionally strong commitment to building the credibility of the Polish military.”
Over the past 22 months we have witnessed an influx of defense equipment, HIMARS, Abrams tanks (…) We have witnessed exercises, technology sharing and data that demonstrate the alliance between the US and Polish armies
– added.
Brzezinski was also asked what the new government in Poland should do to maintain high-level cooperation with the US.
I am confident that the future Polish government will maintain the highest level of cooperation between our countries. We already work very well together and I expect this to get even better. We have never done so much together in the field of security as we do now. We have thousands of American soldiers in Poland; Poles deal very well with refugees from Ukraine, our business relations are fantastic
– said the ambassador.
