On Thursday evening, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki arrived at an informal meeting of leaders of European Union countries, including: Prime Ministers of Croatia, Italy and Malta with the President of the European Council, Charles Michel. The meeting will focus on the priorities and challenges facing the EU.

In addition to Mateusz Morawiecki and the President of the European Council, the host of the event, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, and the heads of government of Italy and Malta, Giorgia Meloni and Robert Abela, will participate in the working dinner.
According to government spokesman Piotr Müller, the leaders’ discussion will be part of the process of preparing the European Union’s Strategic Agenda, and the main topics of the talks will be: assumptions regarding the EU’s general directions and political priorities for 2024-2029, the main challenges for the EU, and issues of sectoral policies and programmes.
As part of the preparation of the Agenda, Charles Michel is consulting with leaders of EU countries. Leaders’ previous discussions on this issue took place during the EU Leaders’ Informal Summit in Granada. The debate then ended with the adoption of the declaration. Work on the 2024-2029 strategic agenda will continue at the European Council until summer 2024.
The following topics could be discussed during the meeting in Zagreb: assumptions regarding the general directions and political priorities of the Union for 2024-2029, major challenges for the EU that will determine the priorities of Community action in the coming years, issues of sectoral policies and programs requiring possible reforms in the context of the future enlargement of the EU, objectives and rules for the financing of the common budget, and proposals to improve the decision-making process in the EU, including voting rules in the EU Council.

As Müller emphasized: “Poland’s position is that European integration must take into account the sovereignty of nation states and be based on the principles of compromise.”
The government spokesperson also recalled that the Council of the European Union will soon vote on the treaty reform that determines the functioning of the EU and its member states.
The proposed changes concern fundamental changes to the legislative system, including the ability of Member States to legislate sovereignly on behalf of their citizens
