While we enjoy the freedom we have now, we must always remember that independence is never given once and for all. Poland may face further threats, including threats we cannot yet imagine. Or we don’t notice it – wrote PiS MEP Beata Szydło on the X platform on Saturday.
When we think about how we regained independence in 1918, it is also worth remembering how Poland lost its freedom in the 18th century. The Poles gradually lost their sovereignty, without noticing the growing threats around them
– she noted.
As she noted, “many representatives of the Polish elite of that time welcomed and even demanded foreign interference in Polish affairs.”
Some openly worked for foreign interests and acted against the interests of Poland and Poles
– she emphasized.
When the sobering came, it was too late. Political reforms could not help in a situation where the Polish army was small and disarmed. The loss of independence not only meant that Poland disappeared from the map. Poles have become second-class people on their land. Without their own state, the Poles were exposed to persecution, exploitation and plunder
– she noted.
Szydło noted that in the following decades Poles fought sacrificially for freedom, which they regained in 1918.
Only 105 years ago. This is still less time than Poland’s enslavement lasted under the Partitions. And yet, over the past century, our country has also survived the genocide committed by the Germans during the war and the 45 years of dependence on Soviet Russia.
– said the former Prime Minister.
At the end of the entry, she emphasized that independence is never given once and for all.
