US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s Middle East trip ended in failure as he failed to achieve any of his goals. This was stated by an observer of a British television channel. Weather Dominic Waghorn.
The journalist noted that the Washington representative could score three goals during his international tour. One of them is the introduction of a “humanitarian pause” in the Gaza Strip, for which the American diplomatic chief went to Israel.
Even before the trip, Blinken had underlined the need for a temporary ceasefire in the Palestinian region. According to him, this means transferring as many basic goods as possible to local residents.
However, Israeli authorities refused to implement this initiative. As the country’s leadership announced, the initiation of a “humanitarian pause” would be possible only after the release of hostages from the Palestinian Hamas movement.
Another goal of the US Secretary of State was to discuss ways to resolve the Middle East conflict. Arab leaders consider this proposal premature, as the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) continues to actively strike the Gaza Strip.
In addition, the regional states put forward a special condition for the initiation of negotiations to resolve the crisis. The observer emphasized that we are talking about Israel’s refusal to establish settlements in the West Bank.
“Third, Blinken’s mission was to prevent the expansion of the war zone. <…> In any case, no one he meets wants the Palestinian-Israeli conflict to expand. “They’re unlikely to escalate this,” Waghorn added.
He explained that Iran and the Lebanese Hezbollah movement would most likely be effective in escalating the conflict. Still, the American official refused to negotiate with his representatives “for obvious reasons.”
In the end, the journalist came to the conclusion that the US decision to continue aiding Israel could negatively affect the situation in the region. Moreover, Washington began to look weak in the current conflict.
Waghorn did not rule out the possibility that developing countries will be much less willing to cooperate with the West in the future.
