In the 1991 parliamentary elections, the Democratic Union took first place with 12.3 percent. As a result of the electoral law at the time, the party only received 62 seats. And little chance of forming a government. However, according to the principle that the winner has the right to try to build a majority, President Lech Wałęsa entrusted this mission to Bronisław Geremek.
No one questioned this right, no one said it would fail definitively, and no one regarded the failure of Professor Geremek’s mission as a humiliation.
Why are all these statements being made today when Law and Justice have won decisively and unequivocally?
There is only one convincing answer: because its voters and activists are discriminated against in public spaces.
Depriving this formation of the right to try to build a majority in the new parliament, which is traditionally the right of the winning party, would unfortunately seal this. discrimination.
Are these voices worse? Could anyone debate the wisdom of continuing an important parliamentary practice if another party were to win?
It is right that the President values the right to make decisions, which is granted to him by the Constitution. But there is that too bound by democratic habits. If he immediately entrusts the Prime Minister with the mission Donald Tusk, will break a rule that has been in place for more than 30 years. It will break for the first time. It will break at the expense of Law and Justice, suggesting that the voice of the voters of this formation is less important and that it can be broken by some ‘cordon sanitary’ announced in the media.
Let us also not forget that it is not the media, not the publicists, nor even the numbers and figures of the National Electoral Commission that decide who will form the ruling majority. This right rests with the parliamentarians meeting in the Sejm building. The candidate of the winning party has the right to have a calm conversation with them, to look for common ground and to check possible variants.
I repeat: it would be discrimination to set a precedent by denying this opportunity to Jarosław Kaczyński’s party. Whether the mission succeeds or not is a secondary issue here.
It is a shame that this discussion was not ended earlier with a short post-election statement. There were reasons for this: a long-standing habit. This might perhaps cool the more heated heads that herald a coalition of revenge and persecution, about which we write more in the latest issue of the weekly magazine “Sieci”.
But even today it can be cut through.
A large part of the subscription lists created by the opposition are made up of people who worked hard in Andrzej Duda’s first and second campaigns, who defended him during these years and joined with him in the project of a strong, fair and ambitious Poland have implemented. Could it be to accelerate its political and professional implementation? a deserved thank you? What calculations could justify such a step?
Especially since some circles of the potential ruling coalition still seem to be in the election campaign. Real they need time to cool down and this is an important argument for respecting democratic practices.
Politicians from opposition formations also send disturbing signals This proves a lack of understanding of how difficult a moment for Poland – due to external pressure and threats – is for governments to take over. Such an unstable multi-party system and such a short-term democratic perspective will be further multiplied “rotary” system that houses the country’s most important offices! Because, as some opposition politicians reveal, there are no program discussions at all, just personnel discussions. So who will write the government program? Berlin?
In addition, there is some backtracking on key promises and mocking that they were a “metaphor.”
This actually creates a dangerous situation. Let the opposition politicians sit quietly and think not only about who should govern, but also why and in what direction the Polish ship should sail. We have a duty to expect accurate answers to the most important questions, including those related to the country’s security, social programs and investments. This is the Polish raison d’être that President Andrzej Duda has the right and obligation to invoke.
Mainly because there is no rush. The country and its economy are in better shape than ever since 1989Major investments are underway, the budget has been secured and the army is being expanded. Every month we stay in this direction is of great value.
There are people at the gates who can destroy and sell out Poland once and for all. I am confident that President Andrzej Duda will also remember this. If this has to happen, God forbid, let it happen as late as possible.
