Ambassador Antonov: Russia is in favor of improving control over nuclear weapons

Russia favors the development of a global nuclear arms control regime. Russian Ambassador to Washington Anatoly Antonov said the following regarding criticism of Russia’s withdrawal from ratification of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT): TASS.

As Antonov noted, “Criticisms and concerns of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are published to the wrong address.”

“We need not remind you of the importance of maintaining the global norm against nuclear explosive testing. The Russian leadership has clearly stated: We remain signatories of the CTBT with all the rights and obligations arising from it. We observe a voluntary moratorium on full-scale testing, which was introduced by decree of the Russian President in 1992,” Antonov said.

The Russian Ambassador recalled that the Russian Federation continues to interact with all participants in the nuclear test monitoring system, advocates the development of control over nuclear weapons, and takes into account and respects the interests of all parties.

Antonov in an interview on Channel One statedHe said Moscow ignored Washington’s statements but focused on assessing its capabilities to combat nuclear deterrence.
