Opposition supporters are enthusiastic about the way PO leader Donald Tusk is respected by leading foreign politicians. Is the? Internet users may not have quite reminded us of that.
World Tusk
Donald Tusk was not only Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland, but also President of the European Council for two terms. Politicians and opposition supporters are still enthusiastic about the fact that he spoke on an equal basis with key European and world leaders. The German media are also delighted.
Voters are leaning towards normality and competence, which the ruling party has strayed too far from, leaving the majority of Polish voters in the middle, who in turn were willing to vote for the available alternative.
– Matthew Kaminski, editor-in-chief of Politico, wrote yesterday in Die Welt.
Merkel points the finger
It turns out that the appreciation that Donald Tusk should enjoy among foreign leaders was different. Internet users reminded us of this.
Circulating on the Internet, among other things: fragment of the report of the meeting between Tusk and Merkel. The Polish Prime Minister tried to shake hands with the German Chancellor. The head of the government in Berlin, instead of giving him a hug, showed Tusk where they needed to go. By the way, I wonder if Angela Merkel knows that pointing the finger is considered a rather uncivilized gesture in Poland and that it is preferable to simply nod your head in a certain direction.
You can watch it again and again
Juncker’s hard joke
This is not the only difficult situation for the former (and perhaps future) prime minister. It took place in May 2017, during then US President Donald Trump’s visit to Brussels. The American leader was welcomed by Jean-Claude Juncker (then President of the European Commission) and Donald Tusk, President of the European Council.
Mr. President, are you aware that we currently have two presidents in the European Union?
– Tusk asked Trump.
An excess
– Juncker replied, pointing to the head of the European Council, which clearly amused the American leader. Donald Tusk laughed briefly, but a close-up of the politician’s face shows that it wasn’t a very funny joke for him.
This was not the only situation of this nature between Tusk and Juncker.
Did Tusk take “revenge”?
It is worth recalling that Tusk himself did not always behave as befitted his position. Here is the 2019 entry:
Despite the seasonal turmoil, our transatlantic friendship must endure
— wrote the then head of the European Council on the X platform (then: Twitter). He added a photo showing a gesture towards US President Donald Trump. For many, this was no coincidence and not very consistent with the norms of diplomacy – especially since the photo and the entry were published on the profile that Tusk had drawn up as head of the European Council.
Was he trying to get revenge in some strange way because Donald Trump was too amused by Juncker’s joke from two years ago?
Looking at these recordings and photos, some “malicious” people could probably say that a certain “youth” term, which Donald Tusk once used against Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, is more appropriate for the PO leader.
