Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said that political unity should spread to the entire continent on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the signing of the Maastricht Treaty and the establishment of the European Union (EU). He wrote this on his page on the social network X (formerly Twitter).

In his opinion, the European Union has realized the hopes of many generations for a peaceful and united Europe.

“Europe needs an EU that covers the entire continent, without gray areas. Our political generation is capable of ensuring this, and I am sure that we will not miss such a special moment,” Zelensky wrote.

He also emphasized that Kiev is making every effort to reach a political decision on negotiations for joining the organization this year.

According to the agency, Kiev will receive a positive recommendation, but will be subject to a number of “additional conditions”.

The EC report may indicate that Kiev needs to work on issues related to national minority rights and the fight against corruption.

Ukraine accelerated its efforts to join the European Union with the start of the Russian military operation at the end of February 2022. Against the background of the conflict, Kiev received EU candidate status and promised to reach the stage of accession negotiations in 2023. At the same time, as of the end of June, Ukraine had met only two of the seven conditions needed to start the negotiation process.

Previously Dutch member of the European Parliament Marcel de Graaf said that Ukraine does not have the right to become a member of the European Union due to pressure from the church.
