“We were building a Polish army capable of effectively deterring Russia from aggression against Poland. Any signal that shows a lack of will to continue, weakening the potential of the Polish military, in a situation where Minister Siemoniak is responsible for reducing Poland’s defense potential during the PO-PSL government, is something terrifying and devastating in the dimension of the Polish army. reason for existence. The question arises where this idea comes from and whether it is an implementation of Berlin’s instructions,” said Prof. in an interview with wPolityce.pl. Piotr Grochmalski, security expert.

wPolityce.pl: How would you respond to the statement of the former (and according to some media reports also the future) head of the Ministry of National Defense, Tomasz Siemoniak, that Poland does not need an army of 300,000 men, and moreover – it doesn’t even have demographic potential?
Prof. Piotr Grochmalski: In the situation of the ongoing war in Ukraine, the increasing tensions in the world and the spreading conflict in the Middle East, sending a signal about the willingness to reduce Poland’s deterrent potential is not so much an absurd action, because it is too weak a term. , but extremely idiotic and irresponsible.
This transmits information that encourages the Russian Federation to intensify its hybrid war against the Polish state. It also weakens the potential of NATO’s eastern flank and signals to the United States that Poland is not committed to defending its security.
What would implementing these types of ideas lead to?
In the case of a country that has paid an enormous amount of blood in its history to defend and regain its state, this is something much worse than extreme irresponsibility. This is part of the potential responsibility for possible aggression by the Russian Federation against the Baltic states. This destroys, or at best undermines, the entire logic of deterrence.

Do you see any specific, coherent vision of the defense of the Polish state on the part of the possible future government?
The fact that the platform did not present any plan or concept in defense of the Polish state during the election campaign is telling. If they were to make public their desire to undermine Poland’s security and expose Polish citizens to what Ukraine is experiencing, I am convinced that Poles would never vote for a team that poses a huge threat to the security of the Polish state. After all, they have escaped an issue so fundamental to the Polish state.
However, there were several announcements related to national defense: “control of procurement and promotion procedures in the Polish Army.” Some politicians from groups such as KO or Trzecia Droga emphasized that some contracts and agreements should be renegotiated or withdrawn.
This can be interpreted as a signal to the German arms industry that the new team will be willing to support the German arms industry at the expense of Polish security and the contracts signed with the Korean and American industries.
The orders concern the most modern systems currently available in the world. Announcements of their renegotiations or withdrawal from these contracts are, on the one hand, clear signals for Russia – which reminds us of the content of the reset that this team organized with Russia, but at the same time – signals for Germany.
Thank you very much for the interview.
