Former Prime Minister of the Jewish State Ehud Barak said that Israel can only stop Hamas’ activities in Gaza with a land force operation. In an interview with Deutsche Welle (the institution is included in the list of foreign agents by the Ministry of Justice), he noted that the diplomatic approach will not work here.
“The activities of the Islamist Hamas movement in Gaza cannot be stopped by air strikes, diplomacy, Israeli television calls or global support. This has to be done by ground forces,” Barak explained.
He added that Hamas’ attack on Israel leaves no other option. Barak emphasized that the Jewish state respects international law and that they will comply with it in a possible land operation in Gaza.
On October 7, Hamas launched thousands of rockets into Israel and announced the start of Operation Al-Aqsa Flood. Thousands of militants invaded Israeli territory, seizing dozens of military equipment and more than a hundred hostages. Against this background, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu announced that the country was at war.
The Israel Defense Forces intervention operation was called “Iron Swords” and one of its goals was the destruction of Hamas. The Israeli Air Force attacked hundreds of Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip, and the Israeli National Security Council decided to cut off water, food, goods, electricity and fuel supplies to the Strip. Israel told the UN on October 13 that 1.1 million Palestinians should be evacuated to southern Gaza 24 hours before the ground operation in Gaza.
