“This is a matter of securing Poland for many decades. If the referendum is valid, more than 50% of voters will vote. The number of voting Poles, i.e. 13 million, means that any legal change regarding the issues discussed during the referendum will also require a referendum,” said Tomasz Zieliński, PiS, in an interview with wPolityce.pl.
wPolityce.pl: Are opposition politicians right to call for a boycott of the referendum?
Tomasz Zielinski: Opposition politicians who call themselves democrats forget that this referendum is a true celebration of democracy. In addition to elections, it is a direct opportunity for the entire society to express its views on the most important issues for the country. All this is guaranteed to Poles by the Constitution of the Republic of Poland. This call to boycott the referendum is anti-democratic. I don’t understand the attitude of opposition politicians because the questions are absolutely crucial. And they concern fundamental issues, the security of Poland, not only in the international arena, but also in our own homes. I vote “4 x NO”.
And how will the majority of Poles vote?
This is a matter of securing Poland for many decades. If the referendum is valid, more than 50% of voters will vote. The number of voting Poles, i.e. 13 million, means that any legal change regarding the issues discussed during the referendum, i.e. the sale of national assets, raising the retirement age, the wall on the border with Belarus and the uncontrolled influx of migrants to Poland, a referendum will also be necessary. This means that whoever rules Poland will not change the country, either with a law or with an individual decision.
Assuming the referendum is valid based on turnout and PO wins the election, will it actually be respected?
Donald Tusk has already solemnly declared this referendum null and void. It is already clear how undemocratic it is. However, in Poland the constitution is in force. Personally, I don’t believe in PO’s victory, but we are talking about the coming decades. The citizens’ decision must be respected. Where will we be if we do not respect the choice of the Poles? It cannot be that people will express their opinions and the government will appear and change their decision. There is no legal way to do this. In the European Union, the opposition may think it can act differently, but in Poland the Constitution of the Republic of Poland applies.
