Poland will not accept harmful solutions regarding migration, and the referendum is necessary to strengthen the importance of our voice at the European Union forum – EU Minister Szymon Szynkowski vel Sęk told PAP after the debate in the European Parliament and the meeting of ambassadors of the Member States.
In an interview with PAP, the minister of EU affairs referred to two events that took place on Wednesday and relate to the European Union’s migration policy. This concerns the debate in the European Parliament on “the need to quickly adopt the asylum and migration package”, as well as the decision to adopt the last part of the migration and asylum package at a meeting of Member States’ ambassadors to the EU.
““Perfect Evidence”
This is perfect proof of the statements formulated a few or twelve months ago by the Polish total opposition, namely that there is no problem with illegal migration, no compulsory system that anyone wants to impose on others, that Poland is not in danger, that referendum is invalid or unnecessary are absolutely wrong
– said the minister.
This week’s events, and we still have the European Council summit ahead of us, where some countries have already announced that they also want to discuss migration, show that this topic is one of the most discussed topics in Europe.
– he added, emphasizing that this is also the result of the crisis in Italy.
As Szynkowski vel Sęk noted, “we see with surprise that European institutions are trying to find the same cure for a known disease caused by known causes, which did not work in the past.”
Moreover, it is an extremely dangerous solution, which the Civic Platform government supported in the past, and which Civic Platform members support today.
– he said.
This only shows the importance of this referendum, it also shows the importance of this opposition to the mandatory refugee relocation system, and I would like to emphasize with full determination that Poland will not accept this kind of harmful solutions, and that it referendum is necessary to ensure the importance of our vote in the European Union.
– noted Minister Szynkowski vel.Sęk.
Asked whether Poland would take such a tough position if the issue of migration comes up at the informal European Council summit in Spain starting on Thursday, the minister for EU affairs said: “I am convinced that the issue of migration will appear – as expected – at the European Council, Poland’s position on this issue will be decisive, irreconcilable and consistent, because we have been expressing this position since 2015.
Debate
The European Parliament held a debate on Wednesday on “the need to quickly adopt the asylum and migration package”.
A common European asylum and migration system must be put in place immediately
– put pressure on the Vice-President of the European Commission, Margaritis Schinas, and Manfred Weber, head of the largest group in the European Parliament – EPP, to which PO and PSL belong – advocated the so-called migration pact.
We need solidarity mechanisms to separate migrants. We must put an end to hypocrisy in the EU. This is the moment of truth. We need a European solution. (…) This is a historical issue. This is probably the most important reform of this term. We must close this issue this term. If this fails, we will open the door to populists and radicals
Weber said.
Also on Wednesday, the last part of the Migration and Asylum Pact was adopted in Brussels during a meeting of ambassadors of the Member States to the European Union. Poland and Hungary were against, while Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Austria abstained. The decision opens the way for starting negotiations with the European Parliament on the final form of the new regulations. In the Polish referendum, which will be held together with the parliamentary elections on October 15, one of the questions is:
Do you support the admission of thousands of illegal immigrants from the Middle East and Africa under the forced relocation mechanism imposed by the European bureaucracy?
