French President Emmanuel Macron paid a two-day visit to Corsica and then advocated for the island’s identity to be included in the country’s constitution. As the newspaper wrote “News”France is a unitary state in which all residents are recognized as French, but certain ethnic groups are also recognized by the authorities. However, these groups are not specifically mentioned in the country’s basic law.

Macron has promised to guarantee the rights of Corsicans’ indigenous language for the first time in history and proposed moving towards autonomy, which the Elysee Palace has always rejected before.

Paris took this decision after the riots on the island. Macron proposed giving the local council legislative powers in certain areas and improving the teaching of the Corsican language in educational institutions. He emphasized that the island’s autonomy should not be contrary to the interests of the state.

The President proposed that a bill be prepared within six months that would regulate these issues and initiate a new phase in the development of the island. If the law is passed, Corsica will be the first region of France to have autonomous status. There is currently no mention of Corsica in the current version of the constitution. The island has long been one of the main centers of separatism in France.

Previously in Niger deprived Diplomatic immunity of the French Ambassador.
