The civil initiative demanding the closure of the consulate of the Russian Federation in the Åland Islands (a self-governance of Finland) received the necessary 50 thousand votes and will go to the Finnish parliament. This was reported on the website of the country’s civil initiatives, reports RIA News.
As of 07:00 Moscow time, the initiative had received 50,051 signatures.
The statement of the initiative states that the Russian consulate in the Åland Islands should be removed because Finland is now a member of NATO and the Russian diplomatic mission restricts and endangers the security of the Finnish state.
From October 1, only one Finnish diplomatic mission will operate in Russia – the embassy in Moscow. Russia still has two diplomatic missions in Finland: an embassy in Helsinki and a consulate in Mariehamn, the capital of the Åland Islands.
