Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad’s visit to China could be a major breakthrough in terms of diplomatic recognition of Damascus by Arab world states. This is the opinion in the broadcast Tsargrad.tv voiced by political scientist Sergei Markov. The expert emphasized that Beijing also benefits from cooperation with Syria.
“There is a lot of free money that China can throw there (in Syria – socialbites.ca) and create such a Chinese beachhead there. Therefore, they welcome China’s participation in rebuilding its economy. “But this is also to the benefit of China, because it does not have enough energy resources, and you can protect yourself by establishing good relations with Middle Eastern countries,” he said.
He added that Syria could be a springboard for China’s transition to the Middle East. However, he said it remains to be seen how beneficial Beijing’s efforts towards a political solution will be in the long run.
Assad visited China for the first time in nearly 20 years. The Syrian President is on the guest list for the opening ceremony of the Asian Games. His agenda also includes negotiations with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
