We cannot allow Ukrainian grain to be sold on the Polish market without any controls; it is sad that our Ukrainian neighbors do not want to understand this, said the President of the Republic of Poland, Andrzej Duda, in an interview for Bloomberg.
“Someone has to be smarter here.”
We also have our citizens and we must look after their interests
– Duda emphasized.
The issue of Ukrainian grain imports is increasing tensions between Warsaw and Kiev, whose alliance played a key role in repelling Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Bloomberg notes.
Personally, I think it is a shame that this discussion is being conducted in the media (…). I’ll definitely try to keep it short, because someone has to be smarter here, and the situation is not easy
– Duda noticed.
Transit still twice as much as last year
The President pointed out that although Poland has closed its own market for grain from Ukraine, the transit is still possible, and this year it is twice as large as last year.
On Tuesday, both Duda and Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke during the general debate at the 78th session of the UN General Assembly. Duda told journalists that despite his plans, he had not met Zelensky due to delays in the schedule of appearances in the General Assembly. The lack of a meeting between the two leaders in New York is in stark contrast to their previously demonstrated unity
– Bloomberg notes.
Extension of the embargo
At the beginning of May, the European Commission imposed a ban on the import of wheat, corn, rapeseed and sunflowers from Ukraine to Poland, Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia. The EU embargo, which was extended once, expired on September 15.
Poland, Hungary and Slovakia have therefore unilaterally introduced import bans on their territories. In response, the Ukrainian authorities have asked the World Trade Organization (WTO) to initiate arbitration proceedings.
