Yoshihide Yoshida, Chief of Staff of the Japan Self-Defense Forces, expressed his opinion on the possibility of a conflict near Japan, similar to what happened in Ukraine. He shared his thoughts in an interview with the broadcast. Nikkei Asia.
Yoshida said: “We cannot rule out the possibility of a major crisis emerging near Japan, and it is of great concern. Japan needs to take two steps. First of all, we must resolutely strengthen our defensive capabilities so as not to be underestimated. Second, we must do everything we can to maintain expanded deterrence, including the use of US nuclear weapons.”
When asked what lessons could be learned from the situation in Ukraine, the general said Japan should strengthen its own defense capabilities rather than relying solely on an alliance with the United States. He added: “In the past we could count on US support in a crisis situation. But if we rely entirely on the United States, there are doubts whether an alliance with us is worth the price. We will develop the potential of our alliance and expand Japan’s ability to act independently.”
