Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu on social media x (“X”, ex Twitter) urged city dwellers to conserve water amid the threat of drought.
According to weather forecasters, precipitation is not expected in Istanbul next week.
“I invite all our citizens to be more careful while consuming and saving water. Our city and our country are facing the threat of drought,” he said.
The mayor’s office said as of Sunday, water reserves in the city’s reservoirs had fallen to 32.38% of normal due to a dry summer. This is the lowest figure in nine years.
Forecasters predict that the average temperature in Istanbul will exceed 30°C next week.
