The United Right informed Polish voters about four questions for the referendum, which will be held parallel to the parliamentary elections.
The media of the Third Republic of Poland immediately reacted with widespread consternation to the decision of the rulers, who left citizens free to express themselves on issues important to Poland.
The point is, of course, that the United Right took the initiative in the election campaign with this move, to which the opposition will find it difficult to respond. Jacek Karnowski and Jakub Maciejewski already wrote about it on this website.

The fear of the elites of the Third Polish Republic
However, it seems to me that such a reaction to the idea of a referendum also hides a certain fear of the people’s declaration, a fear that is deeply rooted in the nature of the elites of the Third Republic of Poland. These elites simply have a deep-seated mistrust of what people feel and think, and they find it frightening and disturbing to know that they are free to express it.
I saw a similar reaction ten years ago in Croatia. At that time, the citizens’ initiative On behalf of the family began with signatures to call a referendum on the constitutional protection of marriage as a union between a man and a woman.
Already then, the left-liberal elites of Croatia, and now also in Poland, tried to prove that a referendum does not necessarily have to be a democratic way of decision-making. These so-called great democrats criticized the referendum, showing that democracy only exists for them if it suits their interests and political views.
Meanwhile, in Croatia in 2013, this limited understanding of democracy was overcome. People went to the referendum and voted for constitutional protection of marriage.
It is quite likely that this false version of democracy offered to us by the left-liberal elites will be defeated in Poland by 2023.
