Amendments to the citizenship law will equalize the rights of native-born Russians and those who acquire citizenship after the reunification of new territories with Russia. This was reported to socialbites.ca by Crimean Senator Sergey Tsekov, one of the authors of the bill. The document was submitted to the State Duma on July 21 and provides for the termination of Russian citizenship by birth, including desertion, discrediting the military and incitement to extremism.
“I think you have carefully read Article 6 of the Constitution of the Russian Federation and the law on citizenship. This article applies to all citizens of the Russian Federation, regardless of how citizenship was obtained. Congenital, acquired or by choice. One option is after the annexation of well-known territories with Russia, including the Republic of Crimea. And it turns out that in the citizenship law, it is possible to terminate citizenship only for citizens of the Russian Federation who obtained it at will. That is, it turned out that citizens of the Russian Federation are not very equal in their rights. So, for this equality to exist, we introduce this rule by which it is possible to terminate citizenship not only for those who acquire citizenship at will, but also for those who acquire citizenship by birth, ”said Tsekov.
According to him, many famous personalities, natural-born citizens of Russia, discredit Russia, tear up passports, insult the country, fight against it, form volunteer armies.
“Who carried out the attack on the territory of the Belgorod region? I think that citizens of the Russian Federation are collectively by birth, 99.9%. So their citizenship cannot be revoked, but we can. I note that the level of Russian patriotism in Crimea is much higher than in some other regions of the Russian Federation. In our country, Russia is not insulted as much as it is insulted … In which regions I will not name, so as not to offend. We are equal according to the Constitution, let’s take care of this equality in all matters. We understand that termination of this citizenship will not be common. The Citizenship Act was passed a long time ago, but has not yet come into force. We are paying attention to this problem,” he said.
Senators Sergei Tsekov (from the Republic of Crimea), Ekaterina Altabaeva (Sevastopol), Olga Bas (Luhansk People’s Republic) and Sergei Kolbin (Sevastopol) were the authors of the citizenship bill. The bill was placed in the electronic database of the State Duma.
In response to the initiative, Andrey Klishas, chairman of the Federation Council Committee on Constitutional Legislation and State Building announcedthat the deprivation of citizenship of a person “by birth” is not provided for by the Constitution.
“I have already expressed my position on this issue, and I would like to emphasize once again that if a federal politician, including the senator of the Russian Federation, passes a law contrary to the Constitution, the foundations of the constitutional order, then for such a politician this is a serious reason to think about whether he will be able to hold his office,” Klihas wrote on the Telegram channel.
April 28 Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the law “On Citizenship of the Russian Federation”, which, among other things, means the deprivation of acquired citizenship of the Russian Federation for actions that discredit the Russian Armed Forces and threaten national security. The document enters into force within 180 days from the date of its signing.
