“For the first time since the Cold War, NATO defense plans have been approved, according to which the philosophy of defense of NATO territory is changing,” President Andrzej Duda said at a meeting of the National Security Council.
President Duda presented the meeting participants with the findings of the NATO summit in Vilnius.
The NATO summit in Vilnius was important, it was a decision-making summit.
He drew attention to the emergence of NATO defense plans.
In fact, these provisions are very important. For the first time since the Cold War, NATO defense plans have been approved, according to which there is a change in the philosophy of defense of NATO territory. (…) Changed to literal deterrence to prevent the capture of a NATO country
– he said.
What was our success, we stated that there should be a preposition i.e. armament. To move units quickly, they must have weapons. These weapons must be stored in potential target countries. (…) We argued that it should be on the eastern flank. And it has been decided that these warehouses must be filled. (…) We also postulated that 2 percent. for defense (…) was adopted as a minimum by the Alliance. (…) This principle has also been adopted
– added.
Relationship with Russia
He also noted the change in NATO’s official language on defining Russia’s actions.
Changing the language is also important. (…) The major states of the alliance insisted that Russia be named a partner of the alliance. (…) Today, NATO officially views Russia as a threat to the Alliance
he said.
Our starting point was that a formal targeting procedure should be followed in relation to Ukraine, ie an assessment of the state’s readiness for accession to the Alliance. (…) And this was included in the conclusions of the summit
said the chairman.
Andrzej Duda also drew attention to the issue of the threat from Belarus.
After the uprising of the Wagner group in Russia, after the statements of the Russian president about the transfer of Russian nuclear weapons to Belarus and the de facto transfer of the Wagner group to Belarus, we had no doubt that this the security architecture in our part of Europe. That is why we have decided to write a letter to NATO leaders about this. (…) Five times in the conclusions it was included in the formula known as the Brzeska Gate, as a strategic area currently at increased risk
– he said.
