On Friday, we expect a deal that will give Poland an additional mandate in the European Parliament for the next term, an EU source told PAP.
Poland will apply for an additional mandate in the European Parliament’s next term, Poland’s ambassador to the EU, Andrzej Sadoś, told PAP in late June. This would mean an increase in the number of Polish MEPs from 52 to 53.
The next EP elections will take place in June 2024. Regarding the composition of the European Parliament, the legislative initiative belongs to the EP, and the final decision requires unanimity of the member states.
In view of the UK’s departure from the EU, the EP leadership proposed increasing mandates for some countries in the next legislature. However, Poland and several other countries are not included, which nevertheless intend to apply for a larger number of seats due to their larger share of the population of the entire EU.
Poland statistics
Statistics support Poland’s demand for an additional mandate. According to demographic data, the population of Poland in 2018 was 7.41 percent. EU-28 population. Meanwhile, according to the latest data, it is 8.41 percent. of the EU-27 population, an increase of 1 percentage point.
In comparison, among the member states that would receive one additional mandate according to the EP’s draft, there are, for example, Denmark – 1.12% EU population in 2018, now 1.31%; Austria – 1.71 percent (2018), currently 2 percent; Finland – 1.07 percent (2018), currently 1.24 percent.
Spain, on the other hand, gets two extra seats – 9.08 percent. (2018), currently 10.6 percent. and the Netherlands – 3.36 percent. (2018), currently 3.96 percent. At the same time, of the nine EU countries for which the EP draft provides for a single mandate, there are countries whose absolute population size has not changed since the previous European Council decision in 2018 (e.g. Slovakia) or even decreased (Latvia). .
