Sudan Civil Aviation Authority has decided to expand restrictions on flights in the country’s airspace. The restrictions will last until 31 July. This was reported by Al Arabia with reference to Khartoum International Airport.
Exceptions apply for humanitarian flights and evacuation flights.
Due to the unstable situation, flight restrictions were introduced on April 22.
The escalation occurred due to disagreements between the military commander Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, who also leads the Sovereign Council, and Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, head of the rapid reaction force. They disagree on the timing and methods of building a unified Sudanese armed force. In addition, the question of who will be the commander-in-chief of the army cannot be resolved. Hence, al-Burkhan believes he should be a professional soldier and Dagalo is an elected civilian president.
As a result, on April 15, clashes broke out between the two structures near the military base in the city of Merov, as well as in Khartoum. Sudan’s Ministry of Health reported that since the beginning of the conflict, more than 3,000 people have died and at least 6,000 people have been injured.
