Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban blocked the European Council’s conclusions on migration and demanded that Poland’s demands be included, the Brussels news portal Politico reported Thursday evening, citing anonymous diplomatic sources.
As Politico reveals, Poland supports Hungary’s position.
This is part of Poland’s plan to convince EU countries (…) to make migration policy decisions by consensus only. The move is an indirect attempt to reverse the recent migration deal, which would have led to the movement of migrants across the continent. This deal only passed because it was approved by a majority vote
Politico recalls.
Orban allegedly said he could not agree to the conclusions on migration if they did not include Poland’s postulated provision on consensus on migration issues. Poland also wants to introduce a provision that each country decides for itself which migrants it “accepts on its territory”, the portal reports.
According to Politico sources, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz described the Polish demands as “unacceptable”.
(…) The impasse means that EU leaders can simply delete the entire migration section from their final statement
– summarizes the Brussels portal.
