“The subject that unites us very much is the approach to migration. We are showing very clearly that it is the EU’s external borders that must be protected, that it is impossible to support smuggling organizations, people smugglers, because it is absolutely immoral, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said at a press conference in Bratislava, where the Visegrad group summit takes place.
On Monday, Prime Minister Morawiecki will participate in the summit of the heads of government of the countries of the Visegrad group: Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland.
The V4 countries have made their mark when it comes to taking in war refugees, which is why today’s approach to migration is also a subject that unites us very much.
– said Morawiecki at a joint conference.
We are showing very clearly that it is the European Union’s external borders that must be protected, that you cannot support smuggling organisations, people smugglers, because it is absolutely immoral, that you cannot support terrorist organizations at the same time
emphasized the Polish Prime Minister.
We do not accept quotas, quotas, allocations of migrants, and we state very clearly that Europe must have mechanisms to protect against external migration
– added.
Negotiating position on migration reform in the EU
The interior ministers of the EU countries have adopted a negotiating position on the reform of migration rules in the EU. This position will form the basis for negotiations between the Council Presidency and the European Parliament. Poland and Hungary voted against support for the so-called migration pact, including the system of “compulsory solidarity”. It means that while “no Member State will ever be obliged to relocate”, “an annual minimum number of relocations will be set from the Member States from which most people enter the EU to Member States less exposed to such arrivals”. This number was set at 30,000.
The minimum number of financial contributions per year is set at 20,000. euros for moving. These numbers can be increased if necessary and situations where no need for solidarity is foreseen in a given year are also taken into account
– we read in the communiqué of the EU Council. In fact, as a senior EU diplomat who took part in the negotiations explained to PAP, this means a choice between the relocation of migrants and a financial counterpart in the event of a lack of willingness to take them in.
In mid-June, the Sejm passed a resolution expressing opposition to the EU’s mechanism for the relocation of illegal migrants, which commits the government to vigorously oppose the proposal. PiS president Jarosław Kaczyński declared in the Sejm that the issue of relocation of migrants in the European Union should be the subject of a referendum.
Government spokesman Piotr Müller told PAP that at the next EU summit, Poland will maintain its position that there is no agreement on the mechanism of forced displacement of migrants.
