Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair spoke of his “close cooperation” with former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, who died in Milan at the age of 87. It has been reported CNN.
Blair, who was Britain’s former Prime Minister from 1997 to 2007, described Berlusconi as “a figure who crosses all borders”. “I know he was a controversial person to many, but to me he was a leader that I thought was capable, insightful and most importantly a man of his word,” Blair said in a statement.
The former British prime minister said that Berlusconi “has been an ally on many occasions in European councils and has strongly defended Italy’s interests”. Blair noted that the former Italian prime minister was “always looking for a practical solution to a complex problem”.
Blair and Berlusconi were close allies during their time as prime ministers. At a time when other European leaders were critical of the war in Iraq, Berlusconi remained a staunch supporter of Blair and US President George W. Bush. Berlusconi also supported Blair’s failed attempt to become President of the European Council in 2009.
