“Hołownia may not have been so anti-PiS, he could point out differences, stand above this division, criticize not only PiS, but also the PO. Then he would have some room in the electorate – constant and absolute. And yes – nowadays no one needs it less and less” – says Prof. Mieczysław Ryba, a political scientist from the KUL.

wPolityce.pl: Leader of Poland 2050 Szymon Hołownia is – again – facing a wave of attacks and hatred from the opposition, especially PO. This time for inviting all major parties in the Polish parliament, including PiS, for talks. How is the situation of Hołownia and his “Third Way” now?
Prof Mieczyslaw Ryba: Hołownia somehow wants to appear in a situation where he is overwhelmed by the June 4 march and the voters’ departure from his party.
He would like to appear in public space in one way or another, to stand out with something. But I think it’s too late. As his following grew, he had time to be critical of the PO, to distance himself from it in many places or to point out differences, and not to join the total opposition as a total critic of Law and Justice, where the difference between him and the PO was practically nonexistent.
Why were Szymon Hołownia and Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz treated like this during the June 4 march?
They can now – at least that’s what Donald Tusk probably imagines – can only come to him on their knees. The conditions are dictated by the President of the PO and they can only submit to him. This is more or less Tuskov’s view.
Hołownia may not have been so anti-PiS, he could point out differences, stand above this division, criticize not only PiS, but also the PO. Then he would have some room in the electorate – constant and absolute. And yes – it is no longer needed by anyone these days.
And, as you can see, participation in the march on June 4 did not help him much, or rather hurt him?
He went to the march out of necessity, there was such pressure after the verification committee, when the liberal media went into hysterics and on the wave of this hysteria he had to go to this march. There he was such a “flower for a sheepskin coat, nobody important.”
PO chairman Donald Tusk has already commented on Twitter what he thinks of Hołownia’s invitation, which is also addressed to PiS. According to Tusk, only “conditions of capitulation” should be negotiated with the ruling party and the future should only be discussed among patriots.
Yes, for example Tsarzasty or other post-communists. They are patriots, and certainly from Tusk’s point of view.
The PO leader is trying to change the meaning of terms – this march should have been a “national”, “patriotic” march, not so extreme ideological, “EU”, because he knows that in this situation it has and uses its electoral meaning such twisted rhetoric.
As for Hołownia, he has the means to suffocate and even suffocate him. Tusk has no such tools here as far as PiS is concerned. He wants to consolidate the opposition based on extreme, anti-PiS rhetoric.
Is Donald Tusk trying to appropriate the concept of ‘patriotism’? The opposition, especially the PO or the left, has repeatedly made such accusations against PiS.
Well, for them, patriotism means going to Brussels and encouraging further attacks against the Polish government and the Polish state. This is absolute hypocrisy, but they do.
It is also interesting that the opposition describes itself as the “democratic opposition”, while using rather few democratic methods even towards potential coalition partners.
They understand democracy by arrangement, by parties from a round table arrangement. What was sealed by the elections of June 4, 1989, was kept as a deal. All those who want to change it, even in an electoral or democratic way, are called “populists”, “fascists”, etc.
There was also the Democratic Camp and the Democratic Front when the PPR came to power. Maybe it’s a reference to this?
It is not very democratic to try to subdue potential coalition partners or to refuse talks – either with the government or with one of the opposition groups?
We are dealing with a sort of uprising, a mini- or pseudo-civil war. This is not very similar to normal relations between politicians in a normal country.
And I think we can already see what was the result of this initial post-march enthusiasm?
As I said, Tusk will gain new strength to strangle the remaining opposition parties, try to destroy them, absorb them. If we’re talking about the issue of fighting PiS, it’s irrelevant. Because on the other hand, it is mobilizing PiS voters.
The undecided were not particularly encouraged, as several court decisions followed immediately after, not only from the CJEU, but also from our Supreme Court, in which the constitutional order was simply overturned, for example in the Kamiński case.
And the verdict in the Turow case is shocking. It is clear that some judges function as members of the opposition party and some of their decisions are shocking to the common man.
Thank you very much for the interview.
