Tomsk City Duma deputy Igor Lyutaev made an attempt to re-start direct elections for the mayor. It has been reported “KP-Tomsk”.

Lyutaev’s initiative was supported by a majority vote of the Tomsk City Council. Now it is planned to submit this request to the regional Duma.

On October 27, 2022, the Legislative Duma of the Tomsk Region decided to replace the direct election of the mayor of Tomsk with a competition procedure. The best candidates selected by the commission on April 10 and 11 refused to participate in the competition, which, according to Lyutev, showed the inefficiency of the competition system.

According to CEC head Ella Pamfilova, a total of 31 applications were submitted to the commission for the use of such voting, with seven regions withdrawing their applications over time.
