United States Secretary of State Anthony Blinken promised that Washington will continue to protect human rights in China and around the world. DEA News.

“The United States will continue to defend human rights and fundamental freedoms in China and around the world,” the head of the State Department said in a statement.

He added that Washington viewed the events in Tiananmen Square on June 4, 1989, as a manifestation of the “brutal repression” of the Chinese government against “peaceful pro-democracy Chinese protesters and their supporters”.

Student riots took place in Beijing in 1989 and reached their peak on June 4, when the Chinese army suppressed the protests with tanks. Protesters demanded democratic reforms. The exact number of victims has not yet been determined: official sources cite more than 200 dead and about 7,000 injured, human rights activists cite thousands of dead.
