I am ashamed that in 1989 I agreed to the elections on June 4, a caricature of democracy, but I had to agree, said former president Lech Wałęsa in an interview with Rzeczpospolita.
Walesa will be on the rise
In an interview published Friday for “Rzeczpospolita”, Lech Wałęsa was asked, among other things, if he was going to an opposition-organized march in Warsaw on June 4.
Yes, I will be in Warsaw that day
he answered.
When asked if June 4 is an important date, he said: “It depends for whom. It depends what we mean by that date. As for the planned demonstration, it is quite an important date because it can get hot .”
The date is “not very” historically significant
When asked if this date is historically significant, he said “not really, because we had to agree on something akin to democracy”.
I’m ashamed I had to agree to this. But I had to, otherwise there would be no follow-up
– he said.
Referring to whether he thinks June 4 should be a holiday, Wałęsa stressed that “the shooting of Wojciech Jaruzelski meant full democracy and should therefore be a holiday.”
On the other hand, June 4 is such an embarrassing holiday. It was a compromise. A rotten compromise, but necessary, necessary, which launched the following processes. It’s just not good education
he assessed.
The former president pointed out that the communists passed these elections, but a large part of them entered the Sejm:
And can it be done differently? What did we have to fight with? We didn’t even have bows, not to mention crossbows… They had nuclear weapons, nuclear warheads in Poland
he said.
Parliamentary elections
When asked if the next election would be the most important since June 4, 1989, Wałęsa remarked that “from the point of view of protecting us from civil war – yes.”
PiS has caused so many problems, committed so many crimes that they must be removed from power as soon as possible, because it becomes dangerous – for Poles and for each of us. This is the last bell before the civil war. If I were younger I would go to battle, but I’m too old
he stressed.
He added that he will choose the lesser evil in the next election. When asked if he would urge people to vote for the Civic Coalition, he pointed out that “in the current state of affairs in Poland, this is the best choice”.
It’s not ideal, it’s not how I see Poland’s future, but it’s the best choice for today. This is the lesser evil for me
he assessed.
