The European Commission’s concern about the adoption in Poland of a new law establishing a special committee to investigate Russia’s influence on Poland’s internal security in 2007-2022 was expressed by European Commission Vice-President Věra Jourova.
In a recording shared on Twitter by Jourova herself, we learn that the law passed by the Polish parliament and signed by the president is “obviously not subject to Art. 7. Treaty on European Union” (Finding of the Council of a risk of a serious violation of the Union’s values by a Member State – note from the editors), but both EU Justice Commissioner Didier Reynders and Jourová “want to use the opportunity to contact the Polish Representation to report your concerns about this bill.
We are deeply concerned about the passage in Poland of a new law establishing a special committee to investigate Russia’s influence
Jourova said.
There are concerns that this law could be used to influence people’s ability to be elected to public office without due process
she added.
We are currently reviewing this new law. At the moment it is too new, too “fresh” to provide a complete and accurate legal analysis of this law. However, I can already assure you that we will not hesitate to take immediate action if we feel there is scope and need to do so.
– said the Vice-President of the European Commission on Tuesday. She added that she and Commissioner Reynders have raised the issue of the newly adopted law in Poland with ministers in the General Affairs Council.
