During a meeting of the member states’ ambassadors to the EU, the Swedish presidency endorsed the EC’s proposal on reforming the asylum and migration system in the EU on Wednesday. Among other things, it assumes relocation to 120,000 migrants per year or the equivalent of €22,000 per person if the state does not want relocation, an EU source told PAP.
22 thousand euros per migrant
Meetings of EU ambassadors are held behind closed doors in Brussels. Wednesday’s topic was reform of the asylum and migration system in the EU. The starting point is the proposal that the EC presented to the ambassadors last week. In the Council, the Swedish Presidency of the EU is steering the proposal.
On Wednesday, the Swedish presidency upheld the EC’s proposal regarding the reform of the asylum and migration system in the EU. It assumes, among other things, relocation to 120,000 migrants per year or the equivalent of €22,000 per migrant if countries do not want to move
an EU source told PAP.
This means that negotiations on this will continue. According to unofficial information from PAP, the Swedes want to conclude the talks before June. Then the Spaniards take over the presidency from them.
The Germans are still hesitant
The Germans, who have not taken a clear position, are hesitant about the proposal, PAP has learned. A qualified majority is required for the regulation to be adopted, but it is not known whether the countries that support the proposal will be able to get it.
According to unofficial information from PAP, Poland’s Permanent Representative to the EU, Andrzej Sadoś, reiterated at the meeting that Poland opposed the proposal. As PAP learned, the Polish diplomat informed that its construction does not in fact provide alternative solidarity measures, and consequently leads to the obligation of member states to pay 22,000 euros for not relocating one migrant, which is a de facto fine. He also recalled that Poland took in the largest number of Ukrainian war refugees.
