I think Roman Giertych should run from the Senate Pact. In Poland, there must be a place in the democratic opposition for Roman Giertych, former finance minister Jacek Rostowski said on Radio Zet. He added that he himself did not intend to participate in the next election.
Former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, lawyer Roman Giertych, announced in a statement posted on YouTube on Sunday that he would stand as a candidate in the upcoming elections to the Senate of the Republic of Poland from the district that includes Poznań County.
I will operate from an independent committee, hopefully with the support of the opposition parties, but from an independent committee. That’s how I feel most comfortable
he inquired.
When asked his opinion on this decision, Rostowski pointed out that “there are no enemies from the left in the Democratic opposition, but also no enemies from the right when it comes to people who definitely identify themselves as democrats”.
I believe that Roman Giertych should be a candidate for the Senate Pact, but I do not want to go into details. Firstly because I do not know them and secondly because listings and candidacies evoke great emotions in every party
he assessed.
A call for unification
According to Rostowski, “the camp of the democratic opposition should be as broad as possible”.
Just like in America, in the camp of the opposition to the authoritarianism of Donald Trump, there is an obvious place for such a person, very conservative, like Liz Cheney, daughter of Dick Cheney, Republican Vice President, in Poland there must be be a place in the democratic opposition for Roman Giertych
he said.
When asked if he plans to run in the upcoming election, Rostowski replied that he had no such plans. He assured that this was a final and final decision.
I can’t get enough of politics (…) but I’m not taking part in these elections. Which is not to say that in the future, one day, I won’t (I will be a candidate).
– added.
At the end of February, representatives of KO, Polska2050, Nieuw Links, PSL and the Local Government Movement “Yes! For Poland” signed a statement concluding the so-called Senate Pact. It is assumed that these parties will not run candidates against each other in the Senate elections. but will nominate common candidates in all constituencies. They will be drawn from all parties in proportion to the opinion polls for each of them and taking into account the best odds in a particular constituency. Current senators belonging to opposition clubs will be given priority to to apply under the Pact.
The first Senate Pact was concluded before the parliamentary elections in 2019 by the Civic Coalition (PO, Nowoczesna, Inicjatywa Polska, Zieloni), the SLD Electoral Committee (SLD, Lewica Together, Spring) and the PSL – Coalition of Poland (including PSL and Kukiz’ 15). As part of the pact, the opposition in the vast majority of constituencies has put forward only one candidate for senator against PiS. Thanks to this, the opposition jointly won the elections to the Senate – with 51 out of 100 seats.
