Lithuania’s Seimas finds Communist Party guilty of torturing and deporting residents

The Lithuanian Parliament found the country’s Communist Party guilty of exile and torture in 1944-1963. Reported by LRT.

2023 marks the 75th anniversary of the greatest exile in Lithuania of the 20th century, codenamed “Spring”.

“In just two days on May 22-23, 1948, more than 40,000 Lithuanians were forcibly deported, including about 12,000 children. Many infants and young children, elderly people, died from diseases or lack of food while being transported in cattle wagons to places of exile in unsanitary conditions,” said Seimas member Audronius Ažubalis.

The Lithuanian Seimas accepted the participation of the local Communist Party in the action by 97 votes. The draft states that it is “responsible for the destruction, seizure and embezzlement of Lithuanian residents, torture and deportation”.

Lithuania also announced that they could refuse to use the Soviet names of the Russian city of Kaliningrad and the Kaliningrad region of the same name, replacing them with Karalyaučius.
