Charged with fraud and illegal money laundering in the US, Republican Congressman George Santos pleaded guilty Thursday to stealing from a store in Brazil. It has been reported Washington post.

The publication states that this case has been going on for about 15 years.

According to the Brazilian government, 19-year-old Santos wrote two fake checks for $430 in 2008 to buy clothes and shoes from a small shop in the suburb of Rio de Janeiro. The store owner soon contacted law enforcement, and Santos was charged with embezzlement.

The publication emphasizes that with the help of video communication, Santos took part in court hearings in Brazil. He confessed to the theft and agreed to pay damages and a fine if the criminal case against him was dropped. The court gave the congressman 30 days to pay the victim a $2,000 fine and $2,800 in damages. The case will only be closed after payment has been made.

Formerly the U.S. Attorney’s Office presented Charges against New York Republican Congressman George Santos.
