Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billström said that Iranian authorities executed Habib Chaab, a Swedish-Iranian citizen today, on 6 May. According to him, the leadership of the kingdom learned this fact with alarm.
“The death penalty is an inhuman and irreversible punishment, and Sweden, together with the rest of the European Union, condemns the use of it under all circumstances. Since Habib Chaab was sentenced to death, the Swedish government has discussed the issue at high level with Iranian officials, Billström said.
As the head of the Swedish Foreign Ministry noted, the kingdom demanded Iran to revoke Habib Chaab’s sentence. He added that he personally raised this issue during his meeting with his Iranian counterpart, Hossein Amir Abdollahian.
Habib Chaab disappeared in Turkey in 2020, Iranian authorities accuse him of kidnapping. Tehran was also found guilty of organizing terrorist attacks in the Swedish-Iranian opposition province of Khuzestan and leading the Arab Movement for the Liberation of Ahvaz. At least 25 Iranian citizens, including a child, were killed and 269 injured in the 2018 terrorist attack in Ahvaz, which Chaab is accused of involvement in.
