We are in constant contact, we are talking about reparations with ministers of the German government and deputies of the Bundestag – says Deputy Head of the Foreign Ministry Arkadiusz Mularczyk in the weekly “Gość Niedzielny”. This is the process of reaching the German establishment so that it understands that this is an absolute priority for the Polish government, he added.
When asked if a joint committee of representatives of both countries has been set up, which specifically discusses reparations, the State Secretary for Foreign Affairs said: “so far there is no such committee, because the German government has replied to a diplomatic note from our government that the case is closed.”
First conversations
We can say that we are in the phase of preliminary talks. A certain section of the political class is beginning to realize that this is a serious problem in international relations
Mularczyk said. He added that this is a process that will take several weeks, perhaps months, before the Germans realize that the matter needs to be resolved.
That’s what conversations are for. My visit to Berlin on 22 May has already been confirmed, where I will meet with parliamentarians and representatives of all political parties of this country, as well as the heads of the Bundestag’s foreign affairs and education committees. You must be aware that Germany is testing the Polish side – how determined are we, how important is this problem to us, can we wait it out?
noted the Secretary of State.
When asked if the country’s elites were aware of the huge losses Poland suffered at the hands of the Germans and that no compensation had been made, Mularczyk replied: “Unfortunately no, therefore meetings with them are necessary.”
The scale and magnitude of the crime
They make them aware of the scale and magnitude of these crimes. I think they open their eyes, because many have no idea what their ancestors did, they live in the belief that everything is done and the topic is closed
he pointed it out.
And added:
We hope that if specific negotiations take place, we will largely compensate the living victims of the Second World War and pay their individual compensation. The generation that survived or was born into the war should get the most satisfaction.
When asked if the Polish side would accept such a solution that the Germans would rebuild the Saxon palace as reparations, for example, the deputy head of the foreign ministry said:
As part of the repair, I think so.
