Court sentences ex-bride of Kazakhstan’s ex-president Nazarbayev to 7 years in prison

On May 4, a court in Astana sentenced Gulmira Satybaldy, the ex-wife of Kazakhstan’s former president Nursultan Nazarbayev’s niece, to seven years in prison for arbitrariness and kidnapping. It has been reported interfax.

According to the ruling, the confiscation of Satybaldy’s assets poses no threat. He will serve his sentence in a medium security prison system (UIS) institution.

Also, the court will appeal with a petition to current president Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to deprive Satybaldy of his state award, the Order of Kurmet.

The court also sentenced Ms. Satybalda’s accomplices to prison. Madi Batyrshaev will stay in the colony for seven years, Rashid Utebekov for five years, neither will be deprived of their property.

On March 17, 2022, Kazakhstan Anti-Corruption Service reported that Gulmira Satybaldy was detained on suspicion of being seized by a raider for a business with her ex-husband. He was also suspected of embezzling 747 million tenge ($1.6 million) of budget funds in 2021 and stealing government funds for the construction and erection works of the 2017 Universiade facilities in Alma-Ata.
