Contrary to the French president, who calls for the strengthening of Europe’s “strategic autonomy”, the Polish leader emphasizes the great importance of the alliance between America and Europe, the Brussels-based news portal Politico stressed in an article.
Unlike France, which has struggled for decades with Europe’s dependence on the United States for security, Poland is one of America’s closest allies on the continent. Warsaw has been pushing hard for years to have US troops stationed on its territory, with many of its recent arms contracts going to US companies
— points to Politico, recalling that earlier this year our country signed a $1.4 billion contract for the purchase of the second batch of Abrams tanks, and awarded $4.6 billion for F-35 fighters.
Strategic partnership with the US
Poland has become one of Ukraine’s most important allies and access to its roads, railways and airports is crucial to supplying Ukraine with arms, ammunition and other aid. This helped to change the perception of Poland, which had been treated before the war as an increasingly marginal member of the Western club due to rule of law violation problems, as a major NATO country. Warsaw also sees the Russian attack on Ukraine as proof that the suspicion of the historical enemy was justified and does not hesitate to point out to Paris and Berlin that they were wrong about the threat from the Kremlin
the portal points it out.
Instead of building strategic autonomy from the United States, I propose a strategic partnership with the United States
— quotes the words of the Polish Prime Minister from “Politico”.
Poland is trying to maintain the most common sense policy, based on a close alliance with the United States within the European Union, and this is the best way for Poland
— this is another statement by Mateusz Morawiecki, quoted by the Brussels portal.
French courtship of Xi Jinping
French President Emmanuel Macron, on his way back from last week’s visit to China, said Europe must resist pressure to become “America’s copycat”. Referring to the tensions between the Middle Kingdom and the US over the status of Taiwan, he warned that the great risk for Europe is “getting entangled in crises that are not ours”. Macron spoke to journalists on board the plane, including the Politico portal.
The French president pointed out that the “major risk” facing Europe is that “it will be entangled in crises that are not ours, preventing it from building its strategic autonomy”.
We don’t want to fall into block versus block logic
– added.
Macron, who spent about six hours with Chinese leader Xi Jinping during his visit to China, discussed with journalists his favorite theory of Europe’s “strategic autonomy” – in which France would play a leading role.
Macron’s statements were very warmly received by Beijing. According to the government daily Global Times, they indicate that “the US strategy to get Europe (in the plan) to contain China has reached a dead end”.
Republican politicians strongly criticized Macron’s statements about European policy towards China. Mike Gallagher, Chairman of the Committee of the House of Representatives of the Communist Party of China, called them “shameful, disgraceful and geopolitically naive”.
