Data from the 2021 National Census indicates that the number of people declaring Silesian nationality has decreased significantly. In 2011 there were 847,000 and in 2021 only 585,000. “The defeat of supporters of the Silesian nationality” – this is how these data were commented on Facebook by Piotr Spyra, historian, co-founder of the Polish Silesian Movement.
National and ethnic identity is a dynamic phenomenon and subsequent censuses show the direction of this dynamic. A comparison of the number of indications of Silesian nationality in the last two censuses (2011 and 2021) clearly shows that the proponents of transforming us Silesians into a separate ethnic or national group are on the defensive. I will show it on two indicators (published today): on the sum of all indications of Silesian nationality and on the first number of indications of Silesian nationality. In the 2011 census: there were 847,000 Silesian declarations (including 436,000 people who declared this nationality first). At the 2021 census, the number was over 585,000. Silesian National Declarations (including nearly 232,000 people who gave this identification first)

This means a decrease of (respectively) 30.9 percent. and 47 percent! So we have a drastic decrease in the number of people declaring Silesian nationality, which is an interesting area of analysis
