“I hope today the final permission will be given from the Georgian side to send a Polish medical aid team to former President Mikheil Saakashvili, Deputy Speaker of the Sejm Małgorzata Gosiewska said at the PAP Studio on Tuesday.
Polish team ready to help Saakashvili
Government spokesman Piotr Müller announced in mid-March that the Polish humanitarian and medical relief team was ready to travel to Georgia to provide medical assistance to former President Mikheil Saakashvili.
Deputy Marshal Gosiewska replied on Tuesday at the PAP Studio, when asked what is happening with regard to obtaining permission to launch a medical mission under the protection of 27 countries of the European Union, that “we are currently waiting for the final permission from the Georgian side to allow Polish medics to enter the hospital and thoroughly examine President Saakashvili.
I hope that will happen today
she added.
Poland is waiting for permission from the Georgian Ministry of Health
According to the deputy marshal of the Sejm, Poland is waiting for the final approval and consent of the Georgian Ministry of Health, which, in her opinion, is trying to slow down as much as possible the process that has been going on for three weeks. .
They are constantly creating problems, even at the stage of selecting doctors and questioning their qualifications
she noted.
This is the great work of Polish diplomacy that has been done, the great work of Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki in Brussels. Our medical committee, our doctors have such an EU umbrella, because although it is a Polish mission, it is sent there by the decision of the European Council and its report will be dealt with in EU bodies. I hope that the consequence of this report will be that President Saakashvili will be dragged to a Polish hospital for thorough treatment.
she rated.
Gosiewska stressed that the health of the former Georgian president is “dramatic”.
I hope we can help him again
she added.
The Saakashvili case
Ex-chairman Mikhail Saakashvili he was detained in October 2021 when he returned to Georgia from exile after eight years. In 2018, a Georgian court sentenced him in absentia to six years in prison for abuse of power in the performance of his duties, while Saakashvili himself denied these allegations and considered them politically motivated.
In November 2021, Saakashvili was transferred to a prison hospital following a hunger strike and reports that his health was deteriorating, raising fears for his life. Dr. David E. Smith and associates stated in the November 28, 2022 toxicology report that Saakashvili’s hair and nail samples showed the presence of heavy metals and other substances, and that many of his pathological symptoms consistent with heavy metal poisoning, occurred during his captivity and which contributed to the rapid deterioration of his health.
In December 2022, Empathy, a Georgian NGO dedicated to the rehabilitation of torture victims, published a report on Saakashvili’s health based on a medical examination conducted by a committee of 10 Georgian and six foreign experts.
The report diagnosed Saakashvili with more than 20 ailments – 10 of them serious – and concluded that his health would not allow him to remain in prison. Despite these circumstances, on February 6, 2022, a Tbilisi District Court judge rejected Saakashvili’s request for release or postponement of sentence on health grounds. The former president himself has repeatedly asked to be allowed to travel abroad to receive appropriate treatment. They expressed their willingness to accept Polish authorities.
