“There, in the eyes of these two, or rather in the eyes of Putin, you see something that I see, something that I fear. I find the look in those eyes shocking and frightening, and that fits the profile of our prime minister. And the jury that awarded this photographer knew something. It also saw what I see,” said Janusz Rewiński, a well-known actor and satirist, a former member of the Polish parliament, in an interview with Michał Rachoń.
The story of one photo
On the 13th anniversary of the Smolensk catastrophe, a fragment of a conversation between Michał Rachoń, currently a TVP Info journalist, then associated with TV Republika, with Janusz Rewiński was recalled on Twitter. The interview was broadcast on TV on April 22, 2015 and the aforementioned fragment concerns a photo of former Prime Minister Donald Tusk, the leader of the Civic Platform (PO), with the Russian satrap Vladimir Putin, from 2021.
I even said in an interview that my opinion started with the meeting on the pier. That some words were said there, because there is a picture. It’s not with these “turtles”, but there is a picture for which the artist received an award. I should find this picture
– said Rewiński, to which Rachoń assured that it would be shown, and indeed, a close-up photo of Vladimir Putin’s face, taken by Łukasz Ostalski, was shown on the screen. Photo “70. Anniversary of the outbreak of the Second World War – Vladimir Putin and Donald Tusk” was awarded the Grand Prix.
There, in the eyes of these two, or rather in the eyes of Putin, you see something that I see, something that I fear. I find the look in those eyes shocking and frightening, and that fits the profile of our prime minister. And the jury that awarded this photographer knew something. It also saw what I see
said the satirist to the journalist.
There is something different about artists, something they see or feel more. They see something, they see a flash. They see that something is going on. They may not be able to explain it rationally, but they feel a certain vibe, or threat, or euphoria. Anyway, this is how art works – first it affects the senses, and then we begin to embrace it intellectually and discover why we like it or why it repels us, or why we fear it or why we want it always look
Rewinski noted.
And this artist, I think, saw it. And that was September 2009, meeting on the pier, right?
the actor recalled.
What happened – according to Donald Tusk – at the pier in Sopot?
The then Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland Donald Tusk met with Vladimir Putin, the then Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, in September 2009 during the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II.
I showed where the beach is, where I run, where my house is, and Prime Minister Putin spoke […] that he enjoys much protection and therefore suffers much
– said Donald Tusk, testifying in court in Warsaw in April 2018, at the trial of Tomasz Arabski. The former head of the Prime Minister’s Chancellery was sentenced to 10 months in prison with a 2-year suspended sentence in connection with organizing a flight to Smolensk.
Photos of the former Polish Prime Minister’s meeting with the Russian satrap, who is currently committing war crimes against the Ukrainian people at the hands of his soldiers, are now often recalled, and for the United Right government they are one of the proofs of the naive, misguided policy of Donald Tusk’s government towards the Putin regime.
