NATO countries have not come to a common position on Ukraine’s entry into NATO, writes Finance Times.
According to the publication, this week the foreign ministers of the alliance member states discussed what could be offered to Ukraine, and they had significant disagreements over whether to present a “roadmap” to Kiev at the July summit in Vilnius.
“The United States is resisting attempts by countries such as Germany and Hungary, Poland and the Baltic states to offer Kiev closer ties with NATO and clear statements of support for its future membership,” the four officials involved in the talks told the FT.
The negotiations came after warnings from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that he would attend the summit only if he was presented with real steps towards NATO membership, such as post-war security guarantees from bloc members or closer cooperation with the alliance.
Ukraine has applied to join NATO after the launch of a Russian special operation last year. Sweden and Finland did the same, the latter joined to the alliance on April 4th.
