Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov and US Ambassador to Moscow Lynn Tracy discussed the detention of an American citizen, Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, in Russia, informs Press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia.
The ministry noted that the meeting took place at the request of the American ambassador. Ryabkov pointed out that the accusations against Gershkovich were serious and noted that he was caught red-handed while trying to obtain confidential information, using his journalistic status as an excuse.
“The clamor about this case, which is aimed at putting pressure on the court and the Russian authorities in the United States, which should decide the fate of Gershkovic, is hopeless and meaningless,” the State Department said in a statement.
The ministry announced that the issue of access to the imprisoned journalist by the representatives of the American embassy was decided by taking into account the current consular practices and Russian legislation.
March 30 FSB RF reported about the arrest in Yekaterinburg of reporter Evan Gershkovich, suspected of spying.
The Wall Street Gazette requested release the reporter and expel the Russian ambassador and journalists from the country. But US President Joe Biden refused to do so.
