It would be more understandable if Tusk applied after May 31, 2022 for some positions in Germany or positions that depend on the decisions of the government in Berlin.
“I have to win this election. I am not interested in a small game” – this was the goal of participation in politics and modesty at the same time, Donald Tusk demonstrated in Lublin on January 20, 2023. Since it is not a small game but a big game , is the fundamental question: who in Poland needs Donald Tusk and why The simplest and most general answer could look like this: no one and for nothing.
The simplest answer may seem shocking. How is someone and for nothing, when it comes to the head of the Polish government for 7 years, the President of the European Council for 5 years and the head of the European People’s Party for a year and a half? However, if we were to take stock of this career, on the side of the win for Poland, for the Poles, there would be a big zero. A number much higher than zero would be on Tusk’s own side. Well, what did Poland and Poland gain from the fact that Donald Tusk was prime minister from November 16, 2007 to September 22, 2014. What was the point if, for example, PLN 250-270 billion did not go to the Polish budget?
What good for Poland and the Poles was the result of what Donald Tusk did from December 1, 2014 to November 30, 2019? Did a decision by the European Commission or the European Council distinguish our country? If anyone thought about money, it came from algorithms. Yes, Poland was not discriminated against then, but that was due to Germany’s decision not to harm its newcomer. What kind of good is this, which means only to refrain from doing evil? But not in the interest of Poland and the Poles, but in the interest of Germany’s long-term goals.
What message is sent to the world when a foreign politician receives the most important awards from another country? That the state recognizes this politician as well deserved for itself. In the specific case for Germany, not for Poland. Three awards for Donald Tusk were no different: May 13, 2010. Charlemagne, November 10, 2011 – “Victoria Golden Award for the European of the Year”, May 31, 2012 – Walter Rathenau.
Besides having enough influence and capacity to place its own politician in any available position, why does a foreign state do this to a foreign politician? Because he believes that this politician can mean at least as much for this country as his politicians, and even more so, because this own politician would be suspected or accused of excessive care (favoritism) for the country of origin. This is the only reason why Tusk was given (by German Chancellor Angela Merkel) the post of President of the European Council.
Significantly, much earlier than in Poland, it was announced in the German Bundestag that Donald Tusk would be a candidate and receive German support for a second term as President of the European Council. It is very significant that the German authorities entered into open conflict on this issue with Prime Minister Beata Szydło, whose government had no intention of exposing and supporting Tusk, as it had its own candidate – Jacek Saryusz-Wolski. Significantly, Tusk was supported by the main German media at the time, even before the candidacy was officially presented.
As President of the European Council, Donald Tusk granted the European Commission, which in most cases acts according to Germany’s diktat, the right to interfere in Polish affairs. For example, in a speech in the European Parliament on 19 January 2016, he supported German demands to force countries such as Poland to adopt unfavorable rules of migration policy, including paying fines for refusing refugee quotas. Since the beginning of 2015, Donald Tusk has become one of the main instruments of German policy implemented through EU institutions.
To put it roughly, it would be more understandable if after May 31, 2022 (after leaving the position of head of the EPP), Donald Tusk applied for a number of positions in Germany or positions that depend on the decisions of the government in Berlin. , than when he applied for the most important positions in Poland. After September 22, 2014, Tusk repeatedly affirmed that there was no Polish national interest in him (in fact, it was forbidden to allow anyone to have any association that such interest existed in his case). And at the same time he affirmed that there was a European interest, only that it was best expressed as part of German interests.
Objectively speaking, there are no reasons for Donald Tusk to exert any influence beyond his own party and his own social circle in 2023 and beyond. Objectively, the Poles have no reason to count on anything good for themselves, for Poland, if Tusk held important state positions. On the contrary, they have reason to expect to lose because of the lessons of the past.
As the reliable Bronisław Komorowski would say, the matter is painfully simple: Donald Tusk is not needed by Poland and Poland for anything. In addition, it is justified to assume that Poland and the Poles would be much better off if Donald Tusk did not occupy important positions. Not only in Poland, but also abroad. CBDO (what had to be proven) and CBDU (what had to be proven).
