The EU Council on Tuesday adopted a regulation with stricter CO2 emission standards for new cars and vans. The scheme is based on 100 percent. reduction of carbon dioxide emissions for new vehicles after 2035.
De-fossil fuel package
I am pleased that the EU is delivering on its Fit for 55 promises. The new rules will create opportunities for advanced technology and an incentive for industry to invest in a fossil-free future
said Romina Pourmokhtari, the Swedish Minister for Climate and Environment.
As Minister Anna Moscow stressed, “Poland voted against the ban on the sale of new combustion engine cars after 2035.”
Opaque and informal discussions, in which Germans push through solutions that mainly benefit their market, show that this has nothing to do with a just transition. In our view, the market and society should be the decisive factor in the choice of technology for the coming decades, not EU coercion
– wrote the head of the Ministry of Climate and Environment on Twitter.
Suitable for 55 goals
The new regulations set the following targets: reduction of CO2 emissions by 55%. for new passenger cars and 50% for new vans in 2030-2034 compared to 2021 levels; 100 percent reduction in CO2 emissions for both new cars and vans from 2035.
Duopoly: Berlin and Brussels
The adoption of the rules – which de facto bans the registration of new combustion engine cars from 2035 – has been called into question in recent weeks after Germany objected, demanding an exception for so-called e-fuel.
As a result of negotiations between Berlin and Brussels, a point on this has been added to the regulation. In it, the European Commission has committed itself to come up with a proposal for the registration of vehicles that run exclusively on CO2-neutral fuels after 2035.
In 2026, the Commission will carry out a detailed assessment of progress towards the 100% targets. emission reductions and the possible need to review them.
