Researchers at the Siberian State Medical University figured out how to determine the obesity of internal organs in children of normal weight and calculate the risk factors for overweight, using the biochemical parameters of the blood and a number of other parameters. “The accumulation of (internal) fat in the internal organs leads to changes in many data of the person. Among them – the level of fatty acids, biochemical parameters. A decrease or increase in some values is a factor in the development of dangerous diseases associated with obesity, which do not manifest themselves in adolescence. The author of the project, Ekaterina Trifonova, told socialbites.ca that doctors who learn about the changes as early as possible will be able to avoid their aggravation.
In a survey of 1,750 schoolchildren, the scientists analyzed the gut microbiome and blood fatty acid composition, along with body composition analysis and physical examination data that could indicate the presence of developing complications and impaired quality of life. These include heart rate, blood pressure, waist and hip measurements, blood sugar and cholesterol levels, psychological questionnaires, etc. The next phase of the project will be the incorporation of research results into FatPredict software for training the neural network model. The software was previously developed at the Siberian State Medical University for the diagnosis of obesity in children.
Trifonova noted that according to the latest estimates of WHO, more than 38 million children under the age of 5 and 340 million children and adolescents between the ages of 5 and 19 suffer from obesity. This can lead to the early development of cancer, diabetes, kidney and heart failure.
The project is implemented under the “Priority 2030” program of the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia.
