Germany is reluctant to help Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression. The Russian influence in this country is strong. Moreover, German society is friendly towards Russia, says the MEP, Prof. Zdzislaw Krasnodębski (PiS).

Berlin inhibits EU action
Germany is the EU country that, essentially, from the beginning of the Russian aggression, has tried to weaken the EU’s stronger action against Russia. Berlin opposes introducing tougher sanctions, including increasing arms supplies to Ukraine, using various tricks. The symbol of this policy are the famous German helmets that Berlin has offered to Ukraine
– says Krasnodębski.
According to him, the aggression against Ukraine practically did not change Germany’s attitude towards Russia.
Russian influence in Germany remains strong. Breaking with this way of thinking, with some of the attitudes on which all of Germany’s Eastern policy was based, has hardly changed. Chancellor Olaf Scholz talks about a change of course, but this change of course is barely visible
– added.
Germany continues to support its government
Krasnodębski points out that, despite the German chancellor’s skepticism about the tightening of sanctions against Moscow, public support for his government is strong.
Looking at the polls, despite the fact that Scholz’s policies are criticized by some German media, it is not socially criticized. Scholz has a lot of support among the Germans. It seems German voters aren’t really concerned about what we know about his SPD party’s ties to Russia, which is reflected in the work of this party’s former chancellor Gerhard Schroder for Gazprom
– say.
Therefore, despite internal political friction, Krasnodębski does not expect a collapse of the German government coalition.
The majority of German society consciously chose the SPD and the current politics deliberately does not bother them. The German elite would rather end this war with some sort of truce concluded so far, such as in 2014, and return to doing business with the Kremlin.
– say.
Krasnodębski also does not believe in the information from the German government that it has exhausted the possibilities of supplying arms to Ukraine.
I don’t think such information is reliable. The Bundeswehr is of course not in the best shape, but let’s not forget that Germany is the largest EU economy with great potential. Germany does not want to get involved in this conflict in any way, it does not want a confrontation with Russia, but a ceasefire
– say.
Austrian objection
Asked about the words of the head of the Austrian Foreign Ministry that Vienna is against Ukraine’s accession to the EU, he replies that he is not surprised, because Russia’s approach has always been “customer-oriented”.
Four former Austrian chancellors work for Russian companies, so there are many more “Schroeder” in Austria than in Germany. It is a country permeated by Russian influences. The collapse of Sebastian Kurz’s cabinet showed the connections we are dealing with in Vienna. Kurz was supposed to be a political talent, but now we know why he was praised and how it ended
– say.
According to Krasnodębski, current events illustrate the divisions that have developed in Europe over the Russian aggression against Ukraine.
On the one hand, the Baltic and Scandinavian countries, Poland, Romania and the United Kingdom, take a strong position on Russia’s actions. On the other hand, we have a conciliatory policy towards Russia from France and Germany. The weakening of EU sanctions are actions carried out in the interest of Russia
– say.
