Moldovan President Maia Sandu spoke about the neutrality of the republic on Moldova1 TV channel.
He reminded that the neutrality of the country is enshrined in its Constitution.
“This is the choice of citizens, we cannot refuse neutrality,” said the head of state.
At the same time, according to him, the neutrality of Moldova does not “protect” the republic “in its current state”.
“In the example of Ukraine, we see that Russia started hostility despite Ukraine’s neutrality,” Sandu said.
He argues that Moldova is now “protected not with impartiality, but by the Armed Forces of Ukraine”, which keeps the Russian army away from our borders.
Former Moldovan Defense Minister Anatoly Nosatiy aforementionedthat the republic does not plan to join NATO in the near future.
Until then Sandu statedThere are “serious debates” in Moldova over whether the country should abandon its constitutionally sacred neutrality and join a “greater alliance”. According to him, if at some point it is decided to change the neutrality, this should happen through a democratic process.
